Random bits and makingness

I was going to tell you my observations on men on the early morning train and the toilet, but 1) I thought better of it 2) I have had the loooongest week and just want to log off and do something that doesn’t involve a computer and 3) I have to locate a sports bra before tomorrow morning and that could take all night.  I’ll tell you about that one next time…

So instead, here are some random photos and makingness updates:

Our office has gorgeous flowers in reception.  These are the ones that were there last week.  I thought they were beautiful:

Norman likes flowers too:

Now can you see him?

I made Little pea a teeny rabbit and a giant Minion egg cosy for Easter:

image

Seriously.  You could get an ostrich egg under that Minion.

My temperature blanket is up to date for March and finally has a few rows of green it in, meaning the temperature is warming up.  At least it was.  We’re back to blue now…:image

You might have seen Little Pea holding this in my last post.  I made it as part of his birthday present:

And I was asked to make a preemie baby hat in return for another donation.  I think it looks like a bowler hat.  I rather like it :)

Hooray for the weekend!  Have a good one :o)

Hippie Pog?

I don’t know quite when it happened, or why it happened, but according to someone at work*, I have turned into a hippie.  The way she says it, it’s interchangeable with ‘laughing stock’, but I’m kind of ok with it, because I think it just means that I’ve started standing by what I believe in a bit more.

It started with the realisation that if I made my own clothes, I didn’t need to worry so much about people far away in sweatshops being exploited so I could buy a cheap top.  So far, in the last two months I’ve made two pairs of comfy trousers, three pairs of smartish trousers, half a thing I won’t admit to yet in case it goes hideously wrong and I’ve converted a dress from a charity shop into a rather decent skirt.  I have one more skirt to make and that’s my summer wardrobe sorted.  I admit I will be buying a few tops as they tend to be more tricky.  And yes, I know the material has to come from somewhere, but  you know, little steps.

Then it was the fact that I could probably eat better than I was.  I started eating vegetables.  A lot –  I rarely have chocolate spread on toast for my tea now.  I actually enjoy them, it’s most peculiar.  Now it’s all about the courgettes and the eggs.  Then I got a bit funny about eggs, so I did some research and found a local place that sells free range eggs that are actually free range (rather than some of the supermarkets ones that are a bit fluffy in their claims).  They taste really good too.  And yes, I still eat a lot of biscuits and chocolate.  But you know, little steps.

And then, in that week I had off work recently, for some reason it dawned on me that I was being better at what I put in me (almost two months in, I’m still on patches rather than the cigarettes, other than the 5 I have had and am still angry with myself for, but it’s not so bad considering I would usually have smoked several hundred in that time).  But what about what I was putting on me?  I did a bit of research on cosmetics – what went in and the ethics of the companies producing them and I felt a bit sick.  So I bought a book and have started making a few bits and pieces.  It’s a whole new sort of makingness, it’s slightly chaotic, very messy and I love it.  It’s like making potions when you were little, only making potions that you can actually use!

I have now been using homemade lip balm, moisturiser, exfoliater, toner, body scrub and makeup remover, all from natural stuff for a couple of weeks and my skin looks better than it has done in ages.

image

I’ve learned two lessons: 1) you shouldn’t use body stuff containing oil on your arms in the shower if you want your nicotine patch to actually stick to your skin (I’ve had to use bandages more than once now) and 2) homemade bath melts need to be given with a warning that after use the bath must be washed down as the amount of oils and butters in them leaves a slippery mess that may result in a broken neck for the next person trying to wash.

OK, it’s not everything I put on me, but you know, little steps….

So if that makes me a hippie, then that’s ok with me.  Although I’m a little concerned about what the next step could be.  If at any stage in the future I start talking about joining a commune, feel free to intervene :o)

* the someone at work calls herself a vegan (loudly, frequently….you know the sort), but has admitted to eating a poached egg and an oyster in the last month on the grounds that one came from a chicken she was sure would have been happy and the other doesn’t have a brain.  She’s clearly not that great at giving people accurate labels…:o)

It’s all about the dinosaurs…

…at least, it is when it is your third birthday and you are a Little Pea.

The animals may be great, especially when you catch a feeding time at the zoo (literally):

But there is nothing like a dinosaur:

Happy Birthday to my most favourite Little Pea. I would say you are a big boy now, but after you told me off a few weeks ago and informed me that ‘No, I is still a little boy’ I won’t make that mistake again.  Thank you for making me laugh lots. And thank you for not quite unlocking the door while I was still on the toilet at the zoo…. :o)

A different sort of sock mystery

We all have those sock mysteries: the ones where you put complete pairs in the washing machine, but by the time you fold them up to go back in your drawer, there are odd ones.  usually at least two (and if you’re like me, you can’t pair up those two odd socks because it would make your feet feel funny and your teeth itch, so instead you just have a ‘looking for my other half’ section in your sock drawer, a bit like an unsuccessful dating service).  I consider this particularly mysterious at Pog towers as there is only one of me; nobody can be snaffling them (unless, of course, Norman Cat is using them as tail warmers.  Come to think of it, that is entirely possible…).  I had a weird one this week though.  I came home on Monday from a walk with the family and found an odd sock.  On my front door step…

This was a first for me.  It was my front doorstep though, so it had to be my sock, didn’t it?  I smelt it (clean) and picked it up. While opening the door, I thought about how on earth it could have got there (other than with a bit of help from Norman) and decided it wasn’t beyond the realms of possibility that it could have got caught in my jumper in the wash and fallen out of a sleeve or something as I left the house.  By the time I got inside though, I had a horrible thought.  My neighbours were leaving to go on holiday when I had left earlier.  I’m not keen on my neighbours.  They are very shouty when I am trying to go to bed, and don’t understand, however often I ask them to turn their bass down that their music is played too loud for a terraced house and the resulting vibrating walls is starting to drive me mad.  I have tried to like them, but among other things, they don’t have many redeeming features.  Maybe it was one of their socks?  They could have dropped it in the chaos of packing or a small child could have picked it up and dropped it outside – they do that a lot with their scooters / rubbish / anything they fancy that I could fall over when I leave for work in the dark.  I dropped the sock in panic, just inside my door.  Anyone’s socks make me feel a bit icky.  If it was one of theirs it could bring on actual throwing up.

And there the sock had remained for four days.  I don’t know if I should throw it away or wash it.  It has now taken on two personalities.  Some days it looks sad, wondering why I have given up on it, after it had only tried to keep one of my feet warm.  Other days it is evil, knowing there is a chance I will take it into my washing machine, clean it and then wear it – despite it really being part of someone I am not terribly keen on, to say the least.

image

Once again, I think I may be over thinking things.  But I think someone else it going to have to make the decision for me about what on earth I should do with it.  Clearly, I need a weekend so I can switch off my brain.  Thank goodness it’s Friday :o)

a healthy moment in a chocolate fuelled weekend…

I may have overdone the chocolate this weekend. How could I not when my parents gave me a huge egg, and my Sisters turned into feeders by giving me these?!

image

Please note: I have not eaten all of this. I might have made quite a dent, but I promise it’s not all gone! Yet….

But I imagine I’m not the only one and I have just put my healthy head back on by making my lunch for the rest of the week. I thought I would pop it on here as it is so easy that even I haven’t managed to make a mess of it and (in my mind at least) it’s a tastier option to sarnies and if you’re a real health nut, it doesn’t contain carbs…

All you have to do is slice a 4-5 courgettes (make courgetti with a spiralizer if you can as I think that probably works better), slice two peppers and beat 4-5 eggs. Throw them all in a bowl, mix them up and season. I also added cubes of halloumi cheese, but I think that might have been a mistake. I used mozzarella last time and that worked well.

image

Line a cake tin with grease proof paper, throw it all in and pop it in the oven for about 20 minutes at 190c. Throw a few slices of cheese on top and cook for another 10 minutes and…ta dah!:

image

Then all you have to do is cut it up, pop it in individual freezer bags, freeze and remember to take one piece out each evening for the next day (that last but is the hardest…).  If you have a microwave, warm it up before eating, if not, it’s good as it is. It makes 4-6 portions depending on your appetite / guilt around chocolate consumed.

I’m not entirely sure it will counterbalance the chocolate, but we can pretend, can’t we? :o)

A bit of overthinking

You know how sometimes we all overthink things?  I think I hit a new high (low?) this week at yoga. We had a different teacher to our usual one and this lady did a thingy at the end where she guided us through a sort of scenario while we lay on our mats under our blankets.  I’m not sure if it was mindfulness or meditation, but lying under my blanket is my favourite bit of the class so it kind of doesn’t matter.

Anyway, as part of this, we had to ‘walk along a beach…’ I imagined a beach in Cornwall with a bracing breeze…. ‘And lie down in the sand’. Well, my Cornish beach didn’t have sand and I thought lying down anywhere on a beach in this country was not going to be particularly relaxing, so I quickly moved myself to a tropical island and tried to catch up with the teacher by lying on the sand quickly. But then I realised that I was lying directly on the sand and it would feel all icky when I stood up and bits were stuck to me.  I imagined myself standing up, spreading a huge towel on the sand and then making myself comfortable. But then I remembered that I had just done all of this with bare feet. I had sand between my toes. I had to sort that out immediately….

I think I missed the rest of the thingy. I think I need to work on not thinking things though quite so much. Happily it’s a four day weekend and if today is anything to go by, I won’t be thinking very much at all :o)

A little Minion army

Last month I posted a picture on Facebook of Little Pea wearing a Minion hat I had crocheted for him:

minion 6

It was less than an hour before someone asked if I could make one for their son and daughter.  It seemed like a good idea to raise some pennies for charity so I agreed.  I slightly altered a pattern from the very talented Repeat Crafter Me (although sadly the pattern seems to have disappeared for the moment) and, even though I never actually announced I was doing this, a few more people asked for a hat or two…

I now have a Minion army stretching from the UK as far as Australia and the Philippines including these lovely Little People (I have permission to use all of the following pictures):

minion 5 minion 4 minion 3 minion 2

How cool is that? And it’s raised £125 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

That’s quite a lot of smiley faces :o)

Thank you very much to the Mum’s, Dad’s and Aunties who donated.  I hope your Little Minions have warm, happy heads :o)

Just when you thought….

….the 40th celebrations were all over, it turns out you can be instructed to appear at your parents house, having made ‘a bit of an effort’, be met on the main road by a shepherd/ Jesus / who knows (Dad with a tea towel on his head, in a dress thing wearing a fake beard…apparently some people stopped to take pictures) and discover that the people most important to you are all in one room, waiting to sing happy birthday to you.

Several different worlds collided as people who I have known for years met each other for the first time.  It was brilliant and surreal.

My Mum and three of her oldest friends(going back to her late teens), who by default have known me all my life, bless them.

Two of my nearly neighbours (and very, very good friends) and an other half, who were tracked down using one forwarded email I sent months ago (sorry, but one day you were going to end up on the blog!)

Special amazement goes to Mum, Dad and my sisters for cooking up a storm of deliciousness.  The rock salt biscuits really were a particularly special treat….

Biscuits and some prose co I was sent home with for my tea :o)

And also to Lovely Friend and her husband who did her 40th birthday in style last night and when I left their house at 2am this morning I wondered if they would ever recover.  Not only did they manage to keep quiet about the fact that I would be seeing them today, but they got upright AND got there looking really rather sparkly! I am officially in awe of you both.

Lovely friend, Gorgeous Godson and Little Pea.

But it wouldn’t be a party without a bathroom incident and after everyone had left and cake had been eaten under the table

image

We realised Little Pea has locked himself in the toilet. The key must have been half turned as we couldn’t push it out from the outside and Little Pea was clearly trying to turn it with all his might but nothing was happening. Sister 2 stood and laughed, Sister 1 and I wondered if she could squeeze through the teeny tiny window. We gave the key turning one last go before trying to find a ladder. ‘Turn it the other way’ we suggested. ‘Oh, ok’ said Little Pea cheerfully as the lock clicked and he walked out quite happily…. :o)

It’s been an eventful week….  Thank you to everyone who has been a part of it, making turning 40 less scary :o)

A grown up Pog?

Last week a colleague told me that reaching your 40s means you no longer have an excuse not to be a grown up, that everything starts to become more settled and sensible. I can’t think of anything worse, so even though I have reached that slightly scary age now, I fully intend to remain Pog like, despite the raised eyebrows of people who think I should know better :o)

I have had a lovely week off and can now confirm that:

  • I have the coolest nephew when it comes to watching films while others have brunch:

image

  • When you are wearing an ‘I am 40’ badge (thank you for that, Lovely Friend) you get given free cake :o)
  • Norman is still afraid of balloons. I have had to pop it in the bathroom so he can’t see it….

image

  • Norman can make it look like he is not about to interrupt the take out curry Sister 2 and her boyfriend have brought over, but actually he is just steadying himself behind the curtains to launch a full on attack on the middle of the dinner table (tikka and korma can spread quite far, it turns out).
  • A spiralizer (yes, I am way behind) can make delicious courgetti, but it also results in this:

image

  • I finally finished my most difficult upholstery project yet. And (even if I do say so myself) it is the most comfortable chair in Pog Towers!

image

  • It is possible (but not surprising given the fact that the last week has mostly focussed around eating) to put on 1/4 stone in a week. Next week I will attempt to just eat at meal times rather than only stopping the grazing to eat a full meal. Oops.
  • Little people give the best birthday cards.  Little Pea chose this one for me:

image

While Gorgeous Godson drew me….compete with wrinkles and walking stick:

image

And and his big brother, apparently unprompted, made his feelings on my age very clear…!
image

It has been a great week.  And there is still a weekend before I go back to work! I could get used to this :o)

A long weekend away!

I think that when I told people who don’t know me very well that I was going to Barcelona for a long weekend with my Mum and Sisters, that they may have imagined a few days of culture and learning. If you have read this blog though, you will know that our family mostly likes to have a giggle. And that is what we did.

I'm not sure we'll ever manage a normal group photo...

I’m not sure we’ll ever manage a normal group photo…

It started before we even got to the airport when Sister 2 complimented my clothes and I was so stunned that I walked into the path of an oncoming bus.

At the airport, things were getting a little confusing over tickets to the point a complete stranger took pity on Mum and asked if she would like to join her visiting a friend in Jersey…

And then somehow my suitcase slipped while going up the escalator and I spent what felt like ages trying to run down the up escalator to catch it before it took out the people who had just got on.  All while my supportive family stood at the top virtually crying with laughter.

To my amazement we got on the flight….to find we were sitting in front of a stag party who we had spotted in the airport bar earlier.  ‘If you can’t beat them, join them’ was the only way to go and Sister 1 did the stag’s make up while Sister 2 did his hair. I then realised I was actually old enough to be their mother and felt a little traumatised.

image

More amazing than getting on the flight was that we made it to Barcelona and the hotel. And I will leave it to the pictures to show you the some of the highlights…

Churros!

There was much photograph taking

But not that much improvement on the group effort...

On Saturday we walked and walked and walked…

image

image

image

image

You can’t take them anywhere….

We deserved a treat...

We deserved a treat…

And while Sister 1 and I had a kronut and Sister 2 and a slightly pathetic donut thing with pretty toppings, Mum missed the memo that we were to indulge and had the teensiest thing on offer:

image

We walked so far, we even reached the land of dragons:

image

And I lost the ability to take a photograph:

image

According to Sister 1’s phone, we actually walked 10.5 miles on Saturday.  Most of this, in fact:

image

We did another 8 miles yesterday.  It still didn’t improve the group shots much:

image

But via the worlds emptiest airport and smallest baguette:

imageWe managed to make it home in one piece, a little more cultured, a little rounder and with very sore feet :o)
